Converts a salary in one place into the equivalent in another, after regional prices and state income tax — so the comparison is take-home, not gross.
Where you are now
Where you are considering
Regional price parities are published per metro area by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Enter both, or leave them at 100 to compare on tax alone.
What this tool knows, and what it does not
It knows: Regional price levels and state income tax rates, applied to the figure you enter.
It does not know: Your deductions, your housing situation, local taxes below the state level, and whether you would actually like living there.

How to use it
1. Enter the offer in gross terms
Base salary before anything is taken out. If there is a bonus you can rely on, add it; if you cannot rely on it, leave it out.
2. Set both locations
The place you are now and the place you are considering. The tool needs both because the comparison is a ratio, not a lookup.
3. Read the equivalent, not the difference
The number to look at is what you would need to earn in the new place to stand still. If the offer is above it, the move pays; if not, it does not, however much larger it looks.
4. Then add the things a calculator cannot price
Commute, whether the employer reprices you after you move, and what happens to the offer if you leave in two years.
