Cookie policy

A cookie is a small file a site asks your browser to keep. This page lists what this site uses, what each one is for, and how to change your mind.

The short version

Necessary cookies are set because the site cannot work without them. Everything else — analytics and advertising — is set only if you accept it in the banner. If you decline, the scripts behind those categories are never requested, so declining actually prevents the third party from being contacted rather than merely recording that you would prefer they were not.

Necessary

These keep the site functioning and cannot be switched off from here.

  • Consent record — remembers which categories you accepted, so you are not asked on every page. Set by this site, kept for about six months.
  • Session and security — protects forms against automated submission and cross-site request forgery. Set by this site, expires when you close the browser or shortly after.

Analytics

Set only with your consent. These tell us which pages are read and which are ignored, in aggregate, so we know what to write next and what to fix. They are not used to identify you.

Advertising

Set only with your consent, by advertising partners including Google, to measure and select the advertising shown to you. Their own policies govern what they do with it; Google’s are at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Embedded content

Where a page includes something hosted elsewhere — a video, a map, a form — that embed is not loaded until you have accepted the relevant category. Until then it is a placeholder, and the third party has not been contacted.

Changing your mind

Use the cookie preferences link in the footer at any time. Changing a category to declined stops the corresponding scripts loading from that point on; to remove cookies already set, clear them in your browser.

Doing it in your browser instead

Every major browser lets you block or delete cookies under its privacy settings, and offers a private browsing mode that discards them when the window closes. Blocking necessary cookies will break parts of this site — the consent banner will reappear on every page, because the record of your choice is itself a cookie.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control

We honor Global Privacy Control signals where your browser sends them, and treat that as a decline for analytics and advertising.
