Editorial policy

This page sets out who writes what here, why, and what we will not do. It exists because the useful thing about a site like this is not that it is confident, but that you can tell when it should not be.

Who writes what

Three people write this site, and each writes only the part they are actually qualified to write.

Cherisse Skeete is an Enrolled Agent, federally licensed to represent taxpayers before the IRS, with an accounting degree and a practice serving small employers. She writes the pages where the tax treatment is the answer: payroll and deductions, gross against take-home, employee and contractor classification, and the tax treatment of retirement and equity compensation. That credential is not stretched past tax. It does not appear on the wage-and-hour pages, because an Enrolled Agent is not a labor-law credential and a byline that implies otherwise is borrowed authority.

Andre Skeete works in People Operations and HR compliance, where the job is turning a statute into a policy an employer can follow. He writes the pages on what the law requires of an employer — posted pay ranges, minimum wage, overtime and hours, pay equity, and layoffs. He is not a lawyer. Those pages describe what an instrument says and link you to it; they do not tell you what to do about your situation.

Charles Slocs writes the data side: what a survey measured and did not measure, how wide a spread really is, which published figure is out of date, and the labor-market series. He also writes the negotiation and offer-comparison material, which is a question about evidence rather than about law.

Every article names its author. Where a credential is relevant it is shown; where it is not, no credential is claimed.

What we do not do

We do not give advice about your specific situation. Nothing here is legal, tax or financial advice, and a page describing a rule is not a determination that the rule applies to you. If a real amount of money or a real dispute is involved, that is a question for someone who can look at your facts.

We do not sell placement. No employer, recruiter, school or service pays to appear on this site or to be described favorably. Where a link earns us anything, it is disclosed on the page itself and not only here.

We do not publish a figure to fill a space. See how we source figures.

We do not write about individual employers’ pay practices from anonymous reports. Self-reported salary data is useful in aggregate and unreliable about any single company, and treating it otherwise is how a rumor becomes a citation.

Corrections and updates

When a figure changes we update the page and change the checked date. When we get something wrong we correct it on the page rather than quietly deleting it. When a rule changes and we have not caught up yet, the page says so.

Articles are reviewed when the data behind them is refreshed, which for most wage figures is annual, and immediately when a statutory change is announced.

How to reach us

Corrections, questions and disagreements are all welcome through the contact page. If you are telling us a number is wrong, telling us where you saw the better one makes it much faster to check.
