Some work exists in twenty metropolitan areas and some exists in nearly all 393. Which kind you do decides whether geography is a constraint on your career or a variable you get to choose. Almost nobody checks which of the two describes them.

Why some work clusters
Every heavily concentrated occupation depends on a small number of very large fixed things. Aviation crew follow hub airports, and there are only so many hubs in the country. Creative direction follows the client industries that buy it.
Biochemists follow research institutions and the funding attached to them, which is similarly immovable. None of those assets relocate easily or get built quickly. You cannot start a hub, and the work goes where the asset already sits.
That is what makes these occupations geographically rigid in a way that has nothing to do with the skill itself. The rigidity is a property of the infrastructure rather than of the people. It would apply equally to anybody who did that work.
Why some work is everywhere
Widely distributed occupations serve local populations and local infrastructure. Every town treats its water, feeds people, fixes machinery and sells parts. The demand is distributed for the simple reason that people are distributed.
That is a form of security almost nobody counts as one. An occupation present in 391 metros cannot be stranded by a single city’s downturn, because there is always somewhere else that needs the same thing done. Distributed demand is a genuine form of protection.
It also means you can move for reasons that have nothing to do with work and still find work. Over a career that option is worth a great deal, and it never appears in any salary comparison. The flexibility is entirely invisible and completely real.
What each pattern costs and pays
In a concentrated occupation, geography is a constraint. You go where the work is, competition is intense because everyone else went there too, and pay is usually higher as a result. A bad local market means relocating rather than switching employers, which is an expensive kind of job search.
In a spread occupation, geography is a choice. Pay is flatter across places and the ceilings are lower, but you can optimize for cost of living, family, weather or anything else you value. The work follows you rather than the reverse.
Neither pattern is better and they suit different lives at different times. What matters is knowing which one you are in before you make a decision that assumes the other. People routinely plan as though they had the flexibility of the second while working in the first.
The mistake in the middle
Plenty of occupations sit between the two extremes and get misread as concentrated because their best-known employers are famous. That misreading closes off options that were genuinely available. People rule out cities that would have hired them.
Software developers are not a clustered occupation in the sense flight attendants are. They appear across hundreds of metros, and the clustering is in the pay rather than in the presence. The work exists nearly everywhere and the premium does not.
So check both numbers. Number of metros tells you whether the work exists elsewhere at all, and concentration tells you where it is dense. An occupation can be widely available and still pay properly in only a handful of places, which calls for a different plan than either extreme.
The measurement trap worth knowing
An occupation appearing in very few metros is not necessarily clustered. It may be mostly outside metropolitan areas altogether, which produces an identical-looking figure for an entirely different reason. Absence from metros is not the same as clustering.
Locomotive engineers turn up in three metros, and that reflects where the survey can see them rather than any cluster. They work along routes rather than in cities. Reading that as concentration would be exactly backwards.
About a sixth of United States employment sits outside metro areas entirely, with roughly 130 million of about 155 million jobs inside the 393 surveyed. Any geographic claim about your occupation has to allow for that, and failing to is the single most common error in this kind of analysis. Nonmetro employment is a sixth of the whole picture.

Two numbers answer it. How many metros report your occupation at all, and what share of its metro employment sits in the top ten. Both are published and both take a few minutes to find.
Together they tell you whether moving is a lever you actually have, or whether the map has already made the decision for you. That is worth knowing before a career choice rather than during one. The answer shapes decisions well beyond one job.
Run it once and the answer stays useful for years. Unlike most labor market figures, this one does not move much from release to release. That makes it unusually safe to plan around.
What clustering does to a career, not just a job search
In a concentrated occupation your employer options are geographic before they are anything else. That shapes decisions years out rather than only at the point of a job change. The constraint operates continuously in the background of everything.
It decides whether you can take a family consideration seriously, whether a partner’s promotion in another city is survivable, and whether you can afford to leave a bad manager without also leaving your house. Those are large constraints and they are invisible from outside. Nobody in a spread occupation ever has to think about them.
People in spread occupations consistently underestimate how much this constrains everybody else. People in clustered occupations underestimate how much of their salary premium is compensation for it. The two groups give each other career advice constantly and it rarely transfers.
Clustering changes over time, slowly
These patterns do move, but on the timescale of the assets underneath them rather than on a business cycle. A hub closing or a research cluster forming rearranges an occupation’s map over a decade or two. Nothing in this data changes on a quarterly cycle.
That makes current concentration a reliable planning input, which is genuinely unusual for labor market data. Most figures in this field are revised annually and some reverse. Geography is the stable exception among all of them.
Where a specific occupation physically sits is one of the few things you can reasonably assume will look similar the next time you think about it. Plan around it with more confidence than you would give any growth projection. A projection describes intentions and this describes buildings.
