Privacy policy
This page explains what this site collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read rather than to be survived.
What we collect
If you only read. Our host records standard server logs — IP address, browser and operating system, the page requested, the time, and the referring page. These exist to keep the site running and secure and are retained for a limited period.
If you accept analytics cookies. Aggregate measurement: which pages are read, roughly where visitors are, which links are followed. If you decline, this is not loaded at all — declining means the request is never made, not that a flag is recorded somewhere while the script runs anyway.
If you subscribe. Your email address, and whichever answers you gave to the short questions at signup. We use those answers to send you the thing you asked for rather than everything we publish.
If you use the contact form. Your name, email address and message, plus basic technical information used to filter automated submissions.
If you use a calculator. Four of the five calculators process everything in your browser: the figures you enter are not sent to us and are not stored. The Salary Benchmark is the exception, because the wage tables it searches are far too large to send to your browser. The occupation and location you choose are sent to our server in the web address so the result can be produced, linked and shared. We do not ask for a salary figure there, we do not keep a record against you, and we do not want your salary in any case.
What we do not do
We do not sell personal information. We do not share your email address with other companies. We do not build advertising profiles of individuals ourselves, and we do not require an account to read anything here.
Advertising
The site carries advertising, which may use cookies to measure and target what is shown. This only happens if you accept advertising cookies in the banner. Google’s practices for its advertising products are described at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites, and you can adjust what Google shows you at My Ad Center.
Cookies
Set out in full on the cookie policy page, including how to change your choice after making it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live you may have the right to see what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, take it elsewhere, object to particular uses, or opt out of sale or sharing — which for us is straightforward, because we do not sell or share it. To exercise any of these, use the contact page. We do not treat you differently for asking.
Unsubscribing takes one click from the bottom of any email we send, and takes effect immediately.
How long we keep things
Server logs for a limited period. Contact form messages for as long as needed to deal with them. Subscriber details until you unsubscribe, after which the address is removed.
Children
This site is intended for adults and we do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with information, tell us and we will delete it.
Changes
If this policy changes materially we will say so on the page and change the date below.
